What is Depression?

Depression is a mood disorder that causes melancholy, sadness, and loss of interest in activities you usually enjoy. It does more than affect feelings, it also pervades your thoughts and behavior, making it hard to participate in life.

What are the Symptoms of Depression?

Each person experiences depression differently. Symptoms may be mild, severe, or fluctuate between the two extremes. The frequency and duration of symptoms if often a sign that professional help would be beneficial to your mental health. When you experience symptoms daily, and they last two weeks or longer, please consider scheduling an appointment with Dr. Alexander Grewal.

Symptoms of depression include:

  • Feelings of melancholy, hopelessness, or emptiness
  • Angry outbursts, frustration, or irritability
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Loss of interest in most or all normal activities including hobbies or sports
  • Tiredness
  • Fluctuations in appetite
  • Anxiety, restlessness, or agitation
  • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  • Slowed thinking, speaking, or body movements
  • Difficulty thinking, concentrating, remembering, or making decisions
  • Unexplained physical problems such as headaches and back pain
  • Frequent or recurring thoughts of death, suicidal thoughts, or suicide attempts

Why Does Depression Occur?

Researchers believe that depression occurs due to a combination of factors, including physical changes in the brain, chemical imbalances, hormonal imbalances, and genetics.

Some people are more likely to suffer from depression than others, and the risk factors for depression may include:

  • Abusing drugs or alcohol
  • Having other mental health disorders
  • History of trauma
  • Serious or chronic illness

How is Depression Diagnosed and Treated?

Dr. Alexander Grewal will diagnose depression based on the results of a comprehensive physical and psychiatric exam. The final diagnosis will be based on the criteria included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Dr. Grewal may recommend several different treatments to patients with depression, including:

  • Medication: Tricyclic antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, and/or atypical antidepressants may help with your symptoms. In some cases, you may have to try a few different medications before you find the right one.
  • Psychotherapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Therapy alone or used together with medication is often effective for treating depression.
  • Lifestyle Changes: Reducing stress, losing excess weight, and/or beginning an appropriate exercise regimen may also help you recover from depression.

How Long Does it Take to Recover From Depression?

Patients who suffer from depression notice an improvement in their symptoms shortly after beginning treatment. However, you should follow Dr. Alexander Grewal’s instructions carefully and keep all of your follow-up appointments, even if your symptoms have improved. It’s important to continue taking any medication as prescribed because suddenly terminating may cause a relapse with more severe symptoms than before.
